Johannesburg, 20 February 2024
Lions Cricket warmly congratulate the South Africa Blind Cricket Team for winning the first of the six T20 Internationals vs New Zealand on Tuesday. Led by Captain and DP World Lions Blind Cricket player Buhle Bhidla, the National team includes fellow Pride players Isaac Bidla, Siyavuya Mahlikihla, Doctor Malinga and Lwande Bhidla.
The remaining five T20’s and one One-Day International (ODI) are set to conclude on Wednesday 28 February.
South Africa previously did battle with New Zealand in 2020, securing victories in both ODI and T20 formats. However, with New Zealand seeking redemption and both teams gearing up for the World Cup later this year, the series promises to be fiercely competitive, so says Pride of Jozi stalwart Isaac Bidla;
“The series kicked off with matches at the Pirates Cricket Ground, renowned for its excellent facilities and conducive playing conditions. Four T20I’s and one ODI will be held at Pirates, while two T20I’s will take place at the Pretoria TUT Cricket Oval. We encourage spectators to come and support these epic encounters and enjoy this unique opportunity to witness world-class blind cricket at its absolute best.”
Commenting on the series, Captain Buhle Bhidla expressed optimism about the team’s preparations and goals;
“As a team, we are using this series as preparation for the 2024 Blind World Cup. We aim to elevate our performance and make significant strides towards our World Cup aspirations. With one win already under our belt, we are progressing well,” said Bhidla.
Reflecting on the importance of Lions Cricket in supporting visually impaired cricketers, Isaac Bidla highlighted the pivotal role played by Lions Cricket in promoting and administering blind cricket at both provincial and national levels;
“Lions Cricket has been instrumental in nurturing blind cricket talent and providing vital support structures for players. We are grateful not only to the Union for their ongoing commitment to the development of the sport but also to our much valued sponsors and partners: We will strive for top class performances every time we take to the field.”
The series between South Africa and New Zealand promises to be a thrilling spectacle, showcasing the skill, determination, and spirit of blind cricket. Fans can expect high-quality cricketing action and fervent competition as both teams vie for victory. Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright smiles as he wishes the players and team well;
“As Lions Cricket, we draw tremendous pride from seeing our Lions don the Protea badge with an unrivalled passion and determination. We congratulate them on yesterday’s win and wish the National Team well in this series, we are behind every one of you: Play well, play fair and give it all you’ve got!”
