The final day of the CSA Girls U16 Week concluded on Friday, 17 December 2021 as Gauteng finished in style with a 6-wicket victory over Western Province in Gqeberha.

Gauteng’s Karabo Meso was the top scorer with 44 runs.

Northerns beat Kei by 51 runs and 5 wickets still in hand. Mienke De Jager of the Northerns picked up 4 wickets for her side.

In their final match, Mpumalanga and Eastern Province played to a draw with both teams finishing on 56/10. Neliswa Dlamini of Mpumalanga and Tsepiso Malahleha of the Eastern Province got 4 wickets each for their respective sides.

Team Manager of Mpumalanga and #gsport16 Volunteer of the Year, Sandile Lukhele, is proud of his team with their performances throughout the week: “I think we did very well given the conditions were tough this side (in Gqeberha),” he said as Mpumalanga won 3 of 5 their matches, with a loss and a draw apiece.

Easterns finished their campaign with a win, beating Limpopo by 8 wickets. Mpumelelo Mashiloane of the Easterns, was their top scorer, finishing on 46 (33).

North-West claimed victory against Northern Cape with 8 wickets in hand. North-West bowlers, Jolene Smith and Lerato Kotokoane both picked up 3 wickets for their sides.

The game between SWD and Free State was called off due to the field being too wet to play.

After being put to bat first, Boland posted 91 for all out after 18.3 overs. Anelmari van Niekerk performed well with ball and bat, posting figures of 20 (22) with the bat and 3-5 with the ball.

Mia Vermaak scored 32 runs off 32 balls for her winning side, KZN Coastal, as they beat Border by 45 runs.

Despite losing their final match, Aviwe Mfiki, the head coach of Border was very happy with his team’s performances.

“Our girls’ main goal for the week was to have fun and produce quality cricket. I believe they were able achieve that goal.

“We played a specific brand of cricket, of which we are proud of, because it shows that the team has an identity. We can keep building on that identity in the years to come,” he added.

“We started on a low note, by losing our first game to a very good Mpumalanga side, but the girls just saw that as wake up call, setting us up for 3 consecutive wins. Those 3 wins were off the back of spirited, all-round bowling displays (our bowlers bowled close to the same amount of overs in every game) and good leadership in the batting department,” he continued.

“Fitness, I believe, played a large part in the last game, where the team struggled to chase down a competitive 96 runs against a well organized KZN Coastal side. All in all, we enjoyed the games. The morale in the team is still high.

“The girls were already speaking about what they can improve on in the upcoming season in the hopes of being chosen to represent their Province in 2022,” he concluded.
